Celebrating 30 Years of Service: Mike Renner Honored by the Illinois Association of Park Districts

Mike Renner, one of Eriksson Engineering’s founding principals, was recently recognized by the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) for 30 years of board service to the Cary Park District (CPD).

After moving to Cary in 1992 with his family, Mike quickly became involved in local initiatives, first with Cary School District  26, and then joining the CPD. After serving on a referendum committee, he later successfully ran for a seat on the park district board. His passion for community service and thoughtful leadership have helped shape some of Cary’s parks and public spaces.

Among his proudest accomplishments:

  • Foxford Hills Golf Course Acquisition: Mike cast the deciding vote to acquire the golf course, recognizing its long-term value to the community.
  • Hoffman Park Referendum: As board president, Mike led efforts to secure the 274-acre property, protecting it from mining activities and transforming it into a vibrant park with trails, disc golf, a dog park, and community gardens.
  • Cary Grove Park Development: Mike helped facilitate the purchase and development of this 80-acre site, now home to soccer fields, playgrounds, an aquatic center, and the annual Stars & Stripes celebration.

The Stars & Stripes event has become a signature summer gathering for Cary, and surrounding community, residents, featuring food trucks, games, live music, and fireworks. Looking back, Mike recalls walking through the park during the event and seeing every inch of green space filled with families enjoying the evening; a moment that perfectly captures the impact of his work.

Mike’s experience with the Cary Park District has also informed his leadership at EEA, where he continues to advocate for thoughtful, community-centered design across the Chicagoland region. We’re proud to celebrate Mike’s dedication and service, as well as the lasting contributions he’s made to both his hometown and the broader A/E/C industry.
