Rockford Public School District 205
Rockford Public School District 205, one of the largest school districts in Illinois, has 42 schools. Eriksson Engineering Associates, Ltd. (EEA) provided civil engineering services for the following significant building additions for the District. The projects were coordinated using a phased approach and implemented during multiple stages.
Hillman Elementary School
Substantial grade change made ADA accessibility a challenge on this site. Working with the Architect and the District, EEA coordinated site and building grades to allow for a fully accessible entrance. EEA also worked with the City of Rockford to obtain a variance from construction of additional stormwater management features. A new building addition, parking, and bus drop-off/pick-up lane were successfully completed.
Welsh Elementary School
Since this building addition was constructed over an existing parking lot, there was a need for a new parking lot with access to the public street on the other side of the building. EEA succeeded in completing the challenging geometric and ADA compliance design. A new playground was also added where there was none before.
Westview Elementary School
A large building addition on the north side of the existing building allowed for the reconfiguration of parking and drop-off/pick-up accesses. The relocation of the accesses allowed for a longer parent pick-up lane within the public street, which was a desire of both the City and the District. A rain garden was also added to provide BMPs and enhance water quality.
Whitehead Elementary School
This project consisted of a new building addition as well as a roadway widening for new parent drop-off/pick-up. In close coordination with the Architect, EEA developed a plan for a switchback handicap ramp to allow for an accessible entrance. EEA also designed an exterior concrete staircase to an existing parking lot, which was several feet lower than the building site.
