The Hudson by Onni Group
The Hudson by Onni Group is a 25-story mixed-use high-rise in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. The luxury apartment complex offers residents many amenities including a landscaped roof deck, swimming pool, parking garage, bicycle parking, lounges and outdoor patios.
Eriksson Engineering Associates, Ltd. (EEA) civil and traffic engineering staff worked with the design team to ensure the building site integrated with the busy, transportation-oriented location. EEA worked closely with engineers from the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) to coordinate improvements to the surrounding roadway network.
To increase pedestrian safety and meet the goals of Chicago’s Pedestrian Plan, Chicago Avenue was reconstructed and restriped to incorporate a concrete pedestrian refuge island, and cross walk striping and signage. EEA also ensured nearby sidewalks, retail entrances, outdoor patios and a CTA bus stop were brought up to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
EEA developed a stormwater management plan to meet the City’s rate and volume control requirements. The project’s detention volume was provided by a vault located below the building. Volume control was accommodated by nearly 14,000 square feet of green roof through a system of planters on the ground, third and fourth floors and a tray system on the 26th floor.
The location of the project presented design challenges when working with the existing public right-of-way infrastructure. EEA collaborated with the design team and City of Chicago engineers to create resourceful solutions including a cast-in-place control structure integrated with a reduced sump detention vault and an outfall pipe with horizontal bends.
