Arndt Park
Eriksson Engineering Associates, Ltd. (EEA) provided civil engineering services for the comprehensive redevelopment of Arndt Park, a much-needed community space located in an underserved area of the City of Des Plaines. The approximately $10M project included the construction of a new public aquatic facility, extensive site improvements, and upgrades to recreational amenities, all designed to enhance accessibility, functionality, and enjoyment for residents of all ages.
As part of the civil scope, EEA designed a new public pool, new playground facilities, athletic courts, and shelters, along with the restoration and expansion of walking paths throughout the park. Special attention was given to ADA compliance, ensuring that all site amenities were accessible and inclusive. Our team also designed a new parking lot to support increased visitor capacity and improve traffic flow within the park.
A key challenge of the project was the detailed earthwork analysis required to optimize space and cost efficiency. On-site studies and coordination with the Park District led to solutions for managing excess spoils, including the enhancement of the existing sled hill and the construction of berms outside active playfields. These strategies preserved valuable open space and minimized disruption to mature trees and existing park features.
Stormwater management was another critical component, with EEA designing systems to meet regulatory requirements while maintaining the usability of recreational areas. Our team provided detailed utility coordination, navigating complex infrastructure including combined sewer systems and ComEd lines. This required extensive collaboration with authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) to ensure seamless integration of new utilities with existing systems.
Despite space constraints and a limited budget, EEA worked closely with the Park District and fellow design team members to bring as many site elements as possible into compliance. The result is a revitalized park and aquatic facility that serves as a welcoming and inclusive destination for the Des Plaines community.
