OrthoMidwest Surgery Center

OrthoMidwest developed a $19 million, 26,570-square-foot medical facility that includes an ambulatory surgery center building, parking lot, driveway and stormwater management areas. The facility provides surgery and pain management procedures that do not require an overnight hospital stay, meeting the growing need for a more cost-effective, safe, convenient and accessible surgical option.

As the civil engineering subconsultant, Eriksson Engineering Associates, Ltd. (EEA) supported Anderson Mikos Architects with site solutions for the new ground-up surgery center. The site, located at 2102 Freeman Parkway in Beloit, Wisconsin, includes an at grade naturalized stormwater basin to improve stormwater quality through native vegetation plantings. Circulation through the site was also designed to include a separate drop off and pick up locations for patients while at the same time accommodating emergency vehicles. This in turn will help with traffic flow and aid in a positive healthcare experience for both patients and their families.

EEA overcame geometric and grading challenges stemming from walls and foundations left from previous developments and the site’s location on top of a steep ridge above Turtle Creek. The stormwater management design required a new connection through a neighboring parcel to avoid potential erosion of the steep creek bank.

The building and parking lots were sited in order to maintain several existing significant trees which provide mature tree cover for the building. This unique project element proved beneficial to the owner as it reduces project costs, is better for the environment, and provides a more visually appealing and welcoming facility for patients.
