Longfellow Elementary School – Community Unit School District 200

EEA has worked with Community Unit School District 200 on a variety of projects, including the design of a new building for Longfellow Elementary School, located in the center of downtown Wheaton.

Architects at Green Associates called on EEA to manage the civil site design for the project.

The district instructed the design teams to schedule the construction around the existing building to allow the school to stay open during the project. To fulfill this, all of the building’s services required relocation through a phased construction approach.

Access and services for the existing building, which abutted the new school, were maintained by EEA through conducting phased utility relocations, managing overlapping traffic patterns, and implementing stringent safety considerations into the site design.

EEA engineers also coordinated permitting services for the district, working with county and village officials. EEA successfully obtained a variance from the DuPage County Stormwater Ordinance by proving the size of the site and the level of coverage of the new building made it impossible to meet the ordinance’s required detention volume.
