Des Plaines River Trail

In an effort to increase accessibility and recreational paths throughout Lake County, EEA was recruited to assist in the development of the Huntington Lakes trail connection. This section of the Des Plaines River Trail joins a residential subdivision to the Independence Grove Nature Trail System. Running more than a half-mile, the trail is 10 feet wide and paved with multi-use aggregate designed for walking, running, biking, and other activities.

EEA’s trail design included base flood elevation calculations and wetland impacts and preservation. Additionally, the trail cut through a heavily wooded area, presenting design challenges. EEA consultants made use of the surroundings and were able to incorporate the existing trees to maintain as much of the existing vegetation as possible.

Design and construction of the trail was coordinated with several government agencies, including the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and the City of Waukegan Highway Department.

Upon project completion, civil work is estimated at a value of $500,000.
