Northshore School District 112 & Edgewood Middle School

In 2015, Eriksson Engineering Associates, Ltd. (EEA) began working on projects at Edgewood Middle School as part of the team hired by North Shore School District 112.

To enhance student safety and reduce congestion on public roads near the school, EEA successfully designed and obtained zoning approvals for a parent and bus drop-off/pick-up ring road and emergency vehicle access. Concurrently, EEA improved ADA accessibility at the front of the building by reducing the steep slope of the old drop-off area.

The priority of the local community was to ensure the addition of the emergency access would not generate increased traffic on residential streets. A dedicated emergency access road using permeable pavers was designed without impacting wetlands and existing trees, and it included an automated gate to allow only life safety vehicles to directly enter the school site.

In addition to the traffic engineering scope, EEA designed improvements to the athletic fields and outdoor activity spaces. The existing soccer fields were crowned and regraded, and an underground stormwater detention system was constructed beneath the fields to manage additional stormwater runoff generated from the construction of the ring road. Pavement sections were added for a large, hard surface play area, as well as for new basketball courts.

In 2019, EEA continued working with the district to provide civil engineering and landscape architectural services associated with a gymnasium expansion on the north side of the existing building, a cafeteria and fitness addition on the northwest side, and a two-story classroom addition constructed within an existing interior courtyard. Site repairs, as recommended by a district-wide site assessment study, and plaza improvements were also included in the project scope. The existing underground stormwater detention system was expanded in order to manage additional stormwater runoff generated from the improvements.
